A second home
in the Highlands

Torran Cottage sits on the southern shores of Loch Duich, where the water meets the hills of the western Highlands. Originally built in 1922 and rebuilt a century later, the cottage has remained in our family for four generations: a place of return and quiet continuity.

Its new form carries forward the simplicity of the original, reimagined with natural materials and wide windows that open to the changing light of the loch. This is not just a holiday let. Shaped by years of family gatherings, long walks, and slow evenings by the fire. It's a place we love deeply, and one we're glad to share.

At the doorstep of
remarkable country

Letterfearn sits within one of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain. You are surrounded by Munros, ancient glens, open sea loch, and a tidal shoreline that changes completely with the light. Fifteen minutes' drive puts you at the start of world-class hillwalking. Skye is forty minutes along the road.

01

Five Sisters of Kintail

20 min drive

One of Scotland's great ridge walks, the Five Sisters stretch across the skyline directly above the cottage. Access the trailhead from the A87. The summit ridge is among the finest in the country.

02

Eilean Donan Castle

20 min drive

One of Scotland's most photographed buildings, set on a small island at the meeting point of three lochs. Worth visiting at dusk when the crowds have gone.

03

Isle of Skye

40 min drive

Cross the Skye Bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh. The Cuillin, the Quiraing, the Fairy Pools — Skye's landscape is endlessly dramatic and easily reached as a day trip or longer.

04

Falls of Glomach

50 min drive

One of the highest and most remote waterfalls in Britain, tucked deep in the Kintail hills. The hike in is rewarding. On a wet day, the falls are extraordinary.

05

Wildlife of Kintail

From the garden

Red deer on the hillside, otters along the loch shore, harbour seals in the water. Golden eagles and merlins hunt above the Kintail ridges. Red squirrels and pine martens in nearby woodland.

06

Talisker Distillery

90 min drive

One of Scotland's most celebrated single malt distilleries, on the western shore of Skye at Carbost. Tours and tastings are available year-round, and the coastal setting is worth the trip alone. A natural pairing with a day exploring the island.

Planning
your journey

A car is essential. Letterfearn has no local transport, and you'll want the freedom to explore once you're here. The drive in along Loch Duich on a single-track road through the glen is part of the experience.

By Car

Drive in

From London, allow approximately 10 to 11 hours via the M6 and A9. From Edinburgh, approximately 4 hours via the A9 and A87 through Glen Shiel. The final approach along Loch Duich is one of Scotland's finest drives. Allow extra time to stop.

By Air

Fly to Inverness

Inverness Airport is the most practical option, just under 2 hours from Letterfearn, with car hire available on arrival. Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are also workable for those happy to make the longer drive through the Highlands part of the trip.

Navigation: Use IV40 8HT or search Torran Cottage, Letterfearn. The final stretch is single-track. Pass places are marked and locals are used to it.

Questions &
answers

What are the check-in and check-out times?
All stays run Saturday to Saturday. Guests are welcome to arrive from 4 pm, and we ask that you depart by 10 am on your final day. The 10 am departure gives us enough time to turn the house around before the next guests arrive.
Is the cottage suitable for children?
Yes. The cottage is on a single level with no internal stairs. The third bedroom has two single beds suitable for children, and a travel cot and highchair are available on request.
Are dogs welcome?
Yes. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome. The garden is fully fenced, and a £50 cleaning fee per dog, per week applies.
What's the Wi-Fi like?
Starlink throughout the cottage, with download speeds typically between 50 and 150 Mbps. Streaming, video calls, and general use all work well. There is a dedicated desk in the second bedroom for those working remotely.
What's included?
Fresh bed linen and towels are provided for all guests.
Where are the nearest shops?
Part of the charm here is the quiet remoteness, but Kintail Crafts, a small shop with basics, is only a 15 minute drive. Balmacara Spar (around 25 minutes, on the road to Kyle) is a useful stop for everyday groceries. Kyle of Lochalsh (30 min) has a Co-op supermarket, butcher, fishmonger, and pharmacy. It might make your stay easier to do a shop before arrival, but you can find everything you need locally.
What wildlife might we see?
Red deer on the hillside and otters along the shore are regular sightings. Harbour seals bob in the loch, and birds of prey, including eagles, hunt above the Kintail ridges. Red squirrels and the occasional pine marten appear in nearby woodland.
